Tree Walks

Guided Tree Walks with Peter Hasted

If you missed the tree walk in April, you can watch it on BBC The One Show until 19th May 2026

We celebrate Hanami in the spring and National Tree Week is at the end of November with tree walks and this is a great opportunity to celebrate trees in Thanet! Take a walk with us in the park guided by Peter Hasted, to discover what these trees mean to so many people.

Join us on Saturday 11th April to celebrate Hanami, the Japanese tradition of enjoying the fleeting beauty of flowers, especially Sakura – the blossom of the cherry trees, in Dane Park, Margate

We look forward to seeing you

Thank you to Twinkle Troughton, artist and former editor of Margate Mercury, for this summary of one of the walks…

“Thanks Peter Hasted of @thaneturbanforest for a wonderful tour of the trees in St Peter-in-Thanet churchyard.

“It’s an incredible churchyard which gets filled with wild flowers and grasses and is teeming with birds and squirrels among a rich variety of tree species from around the globe. It’s always been a favourite place to walk to, and so when I saw Peter was doing a tour to celebrate National Tree Week, I couldn’t miss the chance to find out more about what grows there.

“There are both English and Irish yews, an avenue of linden trees (a species which regularly features in my work), a walnut tree, cherry trees, Holme oak – which is apparently the most populous tree in Thanet due to its resilience to coastal conditions – black pines, poplars and more.

“Thanet Urban Forest are working to increase and improve the urban forests here, and have planted more than 3000 trees across 11 sites so far. Give them a follow @thaneturbanforest and support their amazing work 🌳💚”
